Inukshuk – Silent Messenger
Inuit all over the Arctic know about the existence of places with special power. These places are numerous and very different. Some of them are only known by inaugurated persons, while others can easily be recognized by specific signs – as for instance an Inukshuk. The expression originates from ‘Inuk’ (meaning ‘human’) and ‘shuk’ (meaning ‘looking like’). Beside this important significance Inuksuit (Plural of Inukshuk) are also used to mark good hunting or fishing places, camp sites or places to leave for a journey.
An Inukshuk is usually erected for something special, something new or a big change. Built from solid rock it may, facing the currently strong modifying world, be a sign for safety and stability as well as a reversal point in life.
