Alex Alikashuak (b. 1952)
Alex Alikashuak was born in Nueltin Lake, grew up in Rankin Inlet and now lives in Winnipeg. Although Alex Alikashuak learned the sculptor’s craft at the age of 11, he did not devote himself fully to his artistic career until 1993. From 1970 to 1993, he focused on his political career, during which he participated extensively in the negotiations of his people’s land claims with the Canadian government.
From abstract forms and the use of various media, including stone, deer antlers and bone, Alex Alikashuak creates unique and distinctive compositions. The themes illustrated in his work are linked to traditional Inuit stories and myths.
